Vintage 1995
In Champagne, 1995 was outstanding, a vintage overshadowed by 1996, with elegant, inviting fruit and beautiful balance. In Piedmont, a hail-reduced harvest was followed by a sunny autumn and deeply coloured wines, probably one notch below 1989 and 1990. In Montalcino, rain at the end of August rescued the heat-stressed vines; the small, thick-skinned berries yielded around twenty per cent less juice, so the picking date was decisive. Quality proved very consistent, more elegant than 1990, if not quite as complete as 1997. More on this can be found on our pages about Piedmont vintages, Brunello vintages and Champagne vintages.
Today, many Champagnes from this vintage are still in their prime drinking window, with notes of brioche, roasted nuts and honey. The Brunellos have been considered fully mature since a Salvioni vertical in 2016, at their peak or just beyond it. Currently available from 1995 is the Le Mont Moelleux 1995 from Huet, a white wine from the Loire. Older vintages pass through our hands in small quantities, while neighbouring vintages can be reached via the vintage bar below this text.
