Vintage 1993
The reputation of the 1993 vintage in Montalcino has grown with age. In retrospect, Brunello from this annata is considered underrated, as the overview of Brunello vintages notes; the Riservas from Soldera, Valdicava and Il Poggione have become beautifully matured wines, and the Soldera annata proved surprisingly energetic at thirty years of age, with a drinking window extending to 2038. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo and Barbera did not ripen fully before the rain set in, and the vintage may have turned out similarly to 1988, as can be read in the Piedmont vintages. In Champagne, September rain led to a normal harvest of balanced, less fruit-driven wines that today display mature notes of honey, roasted almonds and baked apple – more on this in the Champagne vintages.
Currently available from 1993 is the Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1ère Trie from Huet on the Loire, a white moelleux. Older vintages pass through our hands in small quantities, and the neighbouring vintages can be reached via the vintage bar below this text.
