Wine Description for Weissburgunder Réserve 2024 by Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Luminous straw yellow with green and pale reflections – a youthful Pinot Blanc that visually promises freshness.
Nose
Still marked by youthful yeast aromatics, the nose initially presents itself as reserved, almost mysteriously closed. The bouquet is dominated by delicate pastry notes: butterscotch, shortbread and butter biscuits, along with subtle apple cake and Tarte Tatin. The fruit palette moves between stone and kernel fruits – apple, pear, quince, ripe peach and apricot. Typical Rheinhessen chalk notes lend purism, a hint of cold smoke recalls the barrel ageing. Delicate vegetable nuances of fennel seed and pea shoots enhance the complexity.
Palate
Compact and dense, with pleasantly creamy texture. The yellow fruit aromas remain present without being forward. The wine impresses through a well-balanced interplay of juiciness and structure, supported by moderate yet precisely integrated acidity that lends structure and freshness. Youthful, yet profound and elegant.
Finish
Juicy and crisp, with renewed yeast character and yellow fruit. The aromas unfold subtly and finely chiselled, the aftertaste remains precise and lingering.
Terroir & Origin
A selection of the finest Pinot Blanc grapes from the Wonnegau, Rheinhessen. The vines benefit from calcareous soils with a high proportion of chalk marl and limestone gravel – ideal conditions for Burgundy varieties.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Spontaneous fermentation in three-year-old tonneaux, followed by ageing until May on the fine lees. This vinification preserves the wine’s distinctive freshness, delicately framed by subtle oak notes. The ageing already lends the wine a serious character in its youth.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with roasted monkfish, scallops in butter sauce, veal schnitzel with cream sauce, risotto with porcini mushrooms, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or creamy cheeses such as mature Comté or Beaufort.
Special Characteristics
A Pinot Blanc with depth that already offers great drinking pleasure in its youth, yet also possesses ageing potential. The combination of spontaneous fermentation, lees ageing and subtle oak use makes this wine an authentic ambassador of Rheinhessen Burgundy tradition.
