Wine Description for Riesling Pettenthal GG 2023 1500ml Magnum by Kühling-Gillot

Character
The Pettenthal ranks among the legendary vineyard sites of Rheinhessen and stands for Riesling of extraordinary precision. Kühling-Gillot, one of the region’s leading estates, produces here a dry Großes Gewächs of remarkable finesse. The magnum bottle underscores not only the ageing potential of this wine, but also the estate’s conviction in its maturation prospects. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol, this is an elegant, tension-filled Riesling that combines power with sophistication.
Terroir & Origin
The Pettenthal in Nierstein ranks among Germany’s historically most significant vineyards. The steep south-facing slopes towards the Rhine are characterised by red Rotliegendes – iron-rich sandstone and clay slate that imparts a distinctive minerality and spice to the wines. This geological formation from the Permian period lends the Riesling an unmistakable depth and complexity. The mild Rheinhessen climate with adequate rainfall enables physiologically ripe grapes whilst maintaining vibrant acidity – a combination that defines great Rieslings.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Kühling-Gillot works according to biodynamic principles and ranks among the pioneers of quality-oriented viticulture in Rheinhessen. The Riesling is selected with meticulous care in the vineyard and handled respectfully in the cellar – typically in traditional large wooden casks that allow the wine time to develop without dominating it. The estate’s philosophy aims for transparency and terroir expression, not effect. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season with cool nights at harvest time.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this calibre demands sophisticated accompaniment: scallops with celeriac purée, pan-fried turbot with champagne sauce, sweetbreads with morels, or equally aged Comté. The minerality of the Pettenthal harmonises beautifully with oysters or sushi. Also an excellent choice with roasted poultry accompanied by creamy sauces.
