Wine Description for Weissburgunder Réserve 2025 by Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
Battenfeld-Spanier ranks among the pioneers of the Rheinhessen quality revolution, and this Weissburgunder Réserve demonstrates impressively why. With moderate 12% alcohol and dry orientation, the wine embodies a precise, cool elegance that suits Pinot Blanc perfectly. The Réserve label signals higher ambitions: selected grapes, presumably extended lees ageing, greater depth. A wine that combines substance with finesse, without slipping into opulence.
Terroir & Origin
The estate manages first-class vineyard sites in Hohen-Sülzen and Westhofen, two of Rheinhessen’s most significant terroirs. The soils – limestone, marl and loess – impart mineral structure and tension to the wines. Battenfeld-Spanier practises organic viticulture and relies on low yields. The Rheinhessen climate, one of Germany’s driest regions, favours physiologically ripe grapes at moderate alcohol levels – a balance that is crucial especially for Weissburgunder.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Blanc is often regarded as the underestimated sister of Chardonnay, and Hans-Oliver and Carolin Spanier exploit this kinship skilfully. The Réserve line is presumably aged in traditional wooden barrels – not to emphasise oak aromas, but to gain texture and complexity. The lees ageing imparts creamy fullness, whilst the house’s Burgundian philosophy ensures restraint and precision. A Weissburgunder that demonstrates the variety is capable of far more than solid everyday wines.
Food Pairing Recommendations
The structure and substance of this wine demand sophisticated companions: roasted turbot with butter sauce, calf’s sweetbreads, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or a creamy mushroom risotto. Also an excellent choice with mature Comté or Beaufort cheese. The moderate acidity and texture make it an ideal food wine – a wine that unfolds its full potential at the table.
