Wine Description for Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2023 1500ml Magnum by Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
This Riesling from Battenfeld-Spanier’s Großes Gewächs collection represents the new generation of Rheinhessen in perfect form. The magnum bottle not only underscores the ageing potential of this precise wine, but also promises a slower, more harmonious development. With 12.5% alcohol and a dry orientation, this Riesling displays cool elegance, expressing the mineral power of its origin unfiltered and unapologetically. The 2023 vintage brought classic conditions to Rheinhessen with balanced ripeness and vibrant acidity structure.
Terroir & Origin
The Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott ranks among Rheinhessen’s historically most significant vineyard sites and is located in Hohen-Sülzen. The site owes its name to a crossroads with a Christ figure and is characterised by limestone soils with a high proportion of shell limestone. This geological peculiarity lends the wines their characteristic minerality and salinity. Weingut Battenfeld-Spanier has established itself as a pioneer of the quality revolution in Rheinhessen and manages its parcels with uncompromising precision and biodynamic principles.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds ideal conditions on Rheinhessen’s limestone soils for filigree, tension-filled wines. Battenfeld-Spanier relies on spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended ageing on fine lees and deliberate avoidance of fining and filtration. The result is Rieslings of impressive texture and depth that have nothing in common with approachable entry-level wines. The GG philosophy demands late harvest, low yields and strict dry selection – principles that are consistently implemented here.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this complexity demands thoughtful accompaniment: scallops with cauliflower purée, turbot in butter foam sauce, calf’s sweetbreads with morels or mature Comté cheese harmonise beautifully. The wine’s saline minerality makes it an ideal companion for oysters or sushi. With Asian cuisine, dim sum or steamed fish with ginger is recommended.
