Wine Description for Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2016 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Radiant, bright golden yellow with delicate mother-of-pearl reflections – a wine that announces its elegance and maturity in the glass.
Nose
Razor-sharp and precise: citrus, orange and lime meet apricot preserve, peach stone and ripe mango. Behind this, a fascinating interplay of spices including cardamom, coriander, galangal and gingerbread spice. Particularly impressive: the mineral flint notes and an umami-like aroma of meat stock and bacon – delicate and unusual in equal measure.
Palate
Juicy and powerful, with spicy structure and fine tannin. The spicy-smoky texture merges with creamy sweetness and a saline foundation to create a voluptuous yet still youthfully exuberant experience. The wine needs time – it will develop into a multi-faceted drop. Decant now and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses.
Finish
Long, spicy and with mineral resonance that underscores the limestone origin. The saline component lingers remarkably long.
Terroir & Origin
The Heimbourg in Turckheim is a small single vineyard on Oligocene, iron-poor limestone soil with south-west to west exposure. The exposed site on the Tertiary fault zone produces aromatic, expressive wines that show accessibility even when young – similar to the Rotenberg opposite, but with significantly lower iron content.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Gris from the upper, wind-exposed part of the vineyard. The 2016 vintage enabled perfect ripeness at moderate alcohol content (12.5% Vol.) – an elegant, dry wine in typical Zind-Humbrecht style.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with aromatic, substantial dishes: morels stuffed with fresh cheese and herbs with sherry reduction, game terrine on lentils with raisins and caramelised walnuts or crispy roasted duck with orange sauce and spinach gnocchi.
Special Features
A Pinot Gris with impressive ageing potential that combines the mineral power of the Heimbourg terroir with typical Zind-Humbrecht precision. Still developing – patience will be rewarded.
