Wine Description for Pinot Gris Heimbourg 2022 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow with silvery reflections – a wine that already reveals its aristocratic heritage in the glass.
Nose
This Pinot Gris displays remarkable aromatic complexity: lemon, grapefruit and orange meld with fresh herbal notes of lemon balm, wild mint and elderflower. A delicate smoky, spicy minerality runs through the bouquet, lending it a perfect structure already on the nose – aristocratic and refined.
Palate
On the palate, the wine shines with surprising freshness and vibrancy. The fine acidity is wrapped in a saline note and glides across the tongue with stimulating, genuinely inspiring intensity. A subtle bitter note in the finish adds further tension and depth to the wine.
Finish
Long, precise and characterised by impressive minerality. The saline freshness and subtle bitterness linger for minutes – a wine with genuine tension and structure.
Terroir & Origin
The vines thrive on the steep western slopes of the Grand Cru vineyard site Heimbourg, on red limestone conglomerate. This distinctive soil demands structure and definition from the Pinot Gris – qualities that this variety often lacks. The western exposure ensures lower sun intensity and facilitates the perfect balance for a dry wine.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Olivier Humbrecht describes Pinot Gris as a „misunderstood grape variety“ in Alsace – a variety that easily transforms and can produce the most diverse styles. The 2022 was deliberately vinified dry, despite the variety’s tendency towards rapidly increasing sugar levels. The fermentation proceeded very slowly, lending the wine additional finesse.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with aromatic cuisine featuring fruity, fresh influences: prawn carpaccio with yuzu and cucumber, chicory gratin with orange or smoked guinea fowl breast with wild herb salad.
Special Characteristics
A wine that rewards patience: several hours of decanting and a generous glass are recommended. After a few days of being open, it gains further expression – a true character wine from Zind-Humbrecht.
