Wine description for Pinot Gris Turckheim 2024 by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Character
- A dry Pinot Gris of quiet depth – precisely what one may expect from an estate with over four hundred years of winemaking tradition. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is regarded as one of the most significant estates in France, and this wine bears the signature of Olivier Humbrecht, the first French Master of Wine: structured rather than soft, mineral rather than opulent, with the silky texture owed to extended lees contact of at least six months. No wine leaves this cellar before one to two years of ageing – patience as a principle that you can taste.
- Terroir & Origin
- Alsace is a geological mosaic, and hardly any producer reads it as thoroughly as Zind-Humbrecht. Around their home village of Turckheim lie some of the region’s most famous vineyard sites, including the Grand Cru Brand with its granitic minerality and the monopole-like Clos Windsbuhl. Across 42 hectares, the family cultivates six Grand Cru sites – each a geological universe in its own right. Demeter-certified since 2002, the vines are farmed biodynamically, and on some of Europe’s steepest parcels horses are once again pulling the plough. Humbrecht describes this approach as “therapy for the vines” – and the low yields of just 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare testify to this consistency.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Gris – one of the four noble varieties in Alsace – is perhaps the region’s most versatile grape: fuller-bodied than Riesling, more refined than Gewürztraminer, with notes of pear, quince, white flowers and a hint of roasted spice. At Zind-Humbrecht it is vinified dry, with moderate 12.5% vol., and benefits from the cool, gentle cellar management for which father Léonard became the first winemaker in France to install cooling systems in wooden casks back in 1981. The result is a wine of linear tension: ripe fruit, fine texture, saline finish.
- Food Pairings
- The dry, structured nature of this Pinot Gris makes it an everyday wine in the very best sense. It pairs beautifully with Bresse chicken in cream sauce, roast pork with dumplings or Alsatian tarte flambée. It is also a convincing choice alongside smoked trout, a pan-fried dish of chanterelle mushrooms or a ripe Munster cheese. Those who prefer regional pairings should serve it with choucroute – the wine’s fine structure and lively acidity effortlessly balance the hearty cuisine.
