  • The Riesling Roche Calcaire 2024 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is a dry Alsace Riesling from limestone-dominated soils, combining citrus freshness and mineral finesse with the meticulous care of a biodynamic pioneer certified by Demeter since 2002.
  • 🎨 Colour: Bright, glossy straw yellow with fine greenish reflections.
  • 👃 Aroma: Lime, white citrus blossom and green apple, underpinned by cool slate and a hint of white flowers.
  • 👅 Taste: Dry and taut, with lively acidity, juicy citrus fruit and a chalky, saline minerality on the long, clear finish.
  • 🎭 Character: A precise, straight-laced Alsace Riesling — cool, profound and elegantly structured, with texture derived from the extended lees contact practised by the estate.
  • 🍽️ Food recommendation: With fresh seafood and oysters, Alsatian Flammkuchen with onions, and poached fish with herbs.
  • ✨ Special features: Vinified by Master of Wine Olivier Humbrecht, whose Demeter-certified estate works its steep slopes with horses and grants each wine one to two years of maturation in the cellar — the name refers to the limestone rock that lends this Riesling its saline tension.

Wine description for Riesling Roche Calcaire 2024 by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Character
A dry Riesling with a taut, limestone-driven contour: clear, cool, and marked by that tense vein of acidity which distinguishes Alsace. The name refers to the limestone – and that is precisely how the wine drinks: mineral, citric, chalky on the finish, without any heaviness. A Riesling that exudes calm while demanding nerves of steel.
Terroir & Origin
Alsace is France’s geological puzzle, and Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has been reading it for generations. The Humbrechts have been winemakers since 1620; Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the Master of Wine title, today cultivates around 42 hectares. “Roche Calcaire” – the limestone rock – stands for soils that lend Riesling finesse and a calcareous structure, akin to the elegance that also defines vineyard sites such as Goldert or Hengst.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, the noblest grape of Alsace, reveals its slender, linear character here. The estate has been Demeter-certified since 2002 and farms biodynamically; in the steepest plots, horses once again work their way through the rows. Patience is part of the house style: at least six months on the lees provide texture before a wine leaves the cellar after one to two years. Yields are kept deliberately low at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Food Pairings
A versatile everyday wine for Alsatian cuisine and beyond: with trout meunière, choucroute, tarte flambée or sushi. Young goat’s cheeses and simply prepared poultry also find a perfect counterpart here. Already delightful now, though a few years of bottle ageing will bring additional depth.
