Wine Description for Weisser Burgunder “Im Sonnenschein” GG 2023 by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Medium straw yellow with a delicate green reflex – clear, luminous and of fine brilliance.
- Nose
- The nose is of striking purity: shell limestone and crushed stone dominate the picture, embedded in lemon zest, lemon pips and fresh herbs. To this are added a hint of apple and the delicate spice of greengage. Pure, precise, unadulterated – the soil speaks directly into the glass.
- Palate
- On the palate, a bright, cool, crystalline fruit unfolds, carried by a silky, almost weightless texture. The fine, penetrating acidity gives the wine tension and backbone, whilst a hint of phenol, finest extract sweetness and a distinct saline element provide complexity. No wood distracts – the complexity emerges from within itself.
- Finish
- Long, mineral, saline. The finish displays grip and depth, leaving a lingering tingle of limestone and citrus and simply leaves the drinker in awe. Outstanding.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site “Im Sonnenschein” lies on the Siebeldingen summer side in the Queich valley – unusually south-facing compared to the otherwise east-facing Haardtrand topography. At 160 to 250 metres elevation and with a slope gradient of up to 20%, the vines grow on pure shell limestone soil from the Triassic – one of the noblest geological substrates in the Palatinate.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Around 40-year-old Weissburgunder vines (Pinot Blanc) provide the raw material for this Große Gewächs. Following gentle, slow pressing, fermentation occurs spontaneously, matured in stainless steel – without wood influence, without compromise. Rebholz trusts the vineyard, and the vineyard repays the favour.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with grilled turbot with herb butter, scallops on pea purée, pike-perch with beurre blanc or a classic Alsatian flammekuchen. Also a revelation as a meditative companion to a piece of fine Comté.
- Special Features
- A Weissburgunder GG that has few equals in Germany. Ökonomierat Rebholz proves that Pinot Blanc – often dismissed as the “little brother” of Burgundy – in the right hands and on the right soil is capable of true grandeur. No wood, no cosmetics – only terroir and craftsmanship in perfect form.
