Wine description for Currá Barbaresco DOCG 2020 by Sottimano
- Character
- A profound, uncompromisingly structured red wine of expressive substance. The style rejects loud effects, relying instead on patient extraction. On the palate, the 2020 vintage demonstrates a quiet power with tightly knit tannins, a dense texture and that aristocratic balance that only emerges through consistently long maceration and noticeable deceleration in the cellar.
- Terroir & Origin
- Grown on the gentle hills surrounding Neive in the heart of the Barbaresco appellation. The grapes originate from the renowned single vineyard site Currà, harvested from old Nebbiolo vines planted between 55 and 70 years ago. This valuable vine material roots deeply into the soil, bestowing remarkable longevity upon the wine. The Sottimano family has farmed its vineyards organically for over four decades, without synthetic fertilisers or herbicides.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, left on the skins by Andrea Sottimano according to age-old tradition for up to 40 to 60 days. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with wild yeasts from the vineyard and cellar. Ageing extends over 24 to 30 months in used Burgundian pièces, with a very low proportion of new wood at around just 15 per cent. The wine undergoes neither fining nor filtration and is bottled unvarnished.
- Food Pairings
- Owing to its robust structure and dense texture, this Barbaresco is the ideal match for braised roast beef, classic beef braised in Barolo, refined venison goulash or aged Parmigiano Reggiano.
