Wine Description for Barbaresco Roncagliette DOCG 2023 by Olek Bondonio

Character
Olek Bondonio belongs to that generation of Piedmontese winemakers who combine tradition and modernity in a convincing manner. His Barbaresco from the Roncagliette vineyard site showcases the classical elegance of Nebbiolo, without neglecting the power and structure that make this variety so fascinating. The 2023 vintage promises the balance between finesse and depth typical of Barbaresco, with that characteristic tension which distinguishes great Nebbiolo wines.
Terroir & Origin
Roncagliette is one of the esteemed single vineyard sites in the Barbaresco region, that prestigious zone in Piedmont distinguished by calcareous marl soils. These soils lend the Nebbiolo its mineral precision and aromatic complexity. The microclimate with its temperature variations between day and night favours slow ripening and the development of fine tannins. Barbaresco traditionally stands for a more accessible, more elegant expression of Nebbiolo compared to the more powerful Barolo from the neighbouring area.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo is one of Italy’s most demanding and longest-lived grape varieties. The thin berry skin produces surprisingly pale wines despite intense colour, with high tannin content and pronounced acidity. Typical aromas include red cherries, roses, tar and truffle. Bondonio likely employs – as is customary in the region – traditional maceration with subsequent ageing in large wooden casks to preserve the fruit whilst giving the wine structure. The 2023 vintage is still young and will benefit from further bottle age.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A Barbaresco of this character calls for Piedmontese cuisine: tajarin with truffle, brasato al Barolo, risotto with radicchio or aged Castelmagno cheese. Game dishes such as venison loin or pheasant also harmonise excellently. The wine’s acidity cuts through richer dishes, whilst the tannins demand protein.
