Wine Description for Currá Barbaresco DOCG 2019 by Sottimano
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, slightly transparent ruby red with delicate brick-coloured reflections at the rim – a classic image of maturing Nebbiolo that announces the elegance of the vineyard site already in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose is of striking clarity and precision. Violets and anise and fennel seeds open the bouquet, accompanied by bay leaf and fine cubeb pepper. Beneath lies a juicy layer of black cherry and sour cherry, a touch of plum, tobacco and crushed limestone. Transparent, clear and of remarkably varietal expressiveness.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Currá unfolds a nervous, wiry tension, typical of the combination of pure limestone terroir and the cooler 2019 vintage. The tannin is taut and precise, the structure firm, yet never coarse. Dark, juicy fruits carry the wine, flanked by fine herbal, tobacco and spice nuances. Fleshy and energetic at once – a Barbaresco with real backbone.
- Finish
- Long, mineral and characterised by chalky, austere freshness. The tannins linger without becoming tiresome. A wine that demands time and rewards generously.
- Terroir & Origin
- The single vineyard site Currá in Neive encompasses merely 2.8 hectares with south-southwest exposure on pure limestone soil – a terroir that gives Nebbiolo its characteristic tension and mineral depth. The vines are 55 to 75 years old and have been farmed organically since the early 1970s.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Nebbiolo, destemmed and fermented on the skins for up to three months, with regular punching down of the cap in open stainless steel vessels. Maturation for approximately 24 months in barrels from François Frère – merely 15% new wood, the remainder one to four years old. A classical, craftsman-like precise approach that lets the terroir speak.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Ideal with Coda alla vaccinara on polenta – the warmth of the braised dish harmonises perfectly with the dense tannin structure. Equally convincing with Parmigiana di Melanzane, whose umami depth mirrors the wine wonderfully. For those preferring something lighter: a well-aged tuna and avocado tartare creates an intriguing counterpoint.
- Special Features
- Sottimano ranks among the most reliable addresses in Barbaresco – consistently organic, site-loyal and without compromise. The Currá 2019 is not a wine for the moment, but a wine for the next ten to fifteen years. Those who bring patience will be extraordinarily rewarded.
