Wine Description for Currá Barbaresco DOCG 2019 by Sottimano

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, transparent ruby red with brick-coloured reflections – classic Nebbiolo profile, hinting at the elegance of the vineyard site already in the glass.
Nose
Beguilingly complex and precise: violets and anise meet fennel seeds and bay leaf, underpinned by cubeb pepper and fine tobacco. Beneath lies a juicy fruit layer of black and sour cherries, plums and a mineral note of crushed limestone. The aromatics appear transparent and clear – typical of the Currá site.
Palate
Here the full energy of the 2019 vintage reveals itself: fleshy and juicy, with taut, wiry tannins and nervous tension. The structure is firm and precisely drawn, carried by dark fruits, fine herbal notes and spicy accents. A Barbaresco with youthful power that nevertheless demonstrates balance and finesse.
Finish
Long, taut and characterised by vibrant freshness. The tannins remain present without dominating, accompanied by persistent fruit and spice nuances.
Terroir & Origin
The 2.8-hectare Currá vineyard site in Neive lies in a south-southwest orientation on pure limestone soil. The 55 to 75-year-old vines, organically farmed since the early 1970s, deliver grapes of exceptional concentration and expression at low yields of 40 hl/ha.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Nebbiolo, destemmed and fermented on the skins for up to three months. Maturation for 24 months in barrels from François Frère (15% new oak, remainder one to four years old). The extended maceration and moderate use of oak emphasise the site character.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Coda alla vaccinara on polenta, Parmigiana di Melanzane or, surprisingly, tuna and avocado tartare – the wine harmonises with robust braised dishes as well as with delicate fish preparations.
Special Features
A Barbaresco with a classic profile and modern polish: enjoyable in its youth, yet with the potential for further ageing. The perfect choice for connoisseurs waiting for the great 2016s – or simply wanting to experience an authentic Nebbiolo right now.
