Wine Description for Currá Barbaresco DOCG 2021 by Sottimano

Character
The Currá is one of the most impressive single-vineyard expressions from the Sottimano estate – a Barbaresco that prioritises precision and depth over opulence. Like all wines from this Piedmontese family business, it embodies a clear philosophy: let the terroir speak, without overworking it. The 2021 vintage is considered exceptionally successful in Piedmont – cooler nights and a balanced summer created ideal conditions for Nebbiolo with fine structure, vibrant acidity and long ageing potential.
Terroir & Origin
The Currá vineyard site lies in the heart of Neive, one of the three core communes of the Barbaresco DOCG. The soils here are characterised by Tortonian marls – compact, clay-rich limestone soils that give Nebbiolo a pronounced mineral tension and structural rigour. This geological particularity distinguishes Neive distinctly from the sandier soils of Barbaresco and Trezzo and is partly responsible for the powerful, tannic texture of the Currá.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo – Piedmont’s great, temperamental grape variety – is experienced here in its most complex expression. Sottimano has worked with organic farming methods for decades and favours gentle vinification: controlled maceration times and ageing in medium-sized oak barrels (Botti), which give the wine space to develop without dominating it. The result is a Barbaresco that combines the classic Nebbiolo signature – tar, roses, cherries, spices – with the elegance of craftsman-like precision in its production.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this stature demands dishes with character and depth. Classic and unbeatable: Tajarin al ragù di salsiccia, Brasato al Barolo or a Finanziera in Piedmontese tradition. Equally harmonious: wild boar ragout, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or truffle dishes of any kind. With sufficient cellar time, the Currá unfolds a complexity that effortlessly accompanies demanding game roasts or braised lamb shoulder.
