Wine Description for Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2021 by Chiara Boschis – E.Pira & Figli
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, saturated cherry red with remarkable density and scarcely any transparency – an unusually concentrated Barolo that announces its substance visually from the outset.
- Nose
- This Mosconi displays aromas as dark as its colour. The nose reveals a complex spectrum of blackcurrants, blackberries and blueberries, complemented by notes of hung meat and leather. Floral accents of lavender and violet weave through undergrowth, liquorice, tobacco and a refreshing mint note.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Mosconi unfolds impressive power: juicy, firm and vibrant with palpable pressure and depth. A subtle floral perfume hovers over dark fruit, threaded through with tobacco, spices and earthy nuances. The substance is considerable, the texture grippy, supported by fine tannin grain that combines elegance with structural clarity.
- Finish
- Long, precise and with sustained depth – the fine tannin structure carries far and leaves an impression of noble concentration.
- Terroir & Origin
- The oldest parcels of the Mosconi vineyard site in Monforte d’Alba at approximately 400 metres elevation provide the fruit. The calcareous clay marl with grey colouration alternates with silica-rich sandstones; calcium carbonate and iron lend a warmer, slightly pink hue in places. This geological diversity shapes the structure and the exceptional ageing potential of this Barolo.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Nebbiolo in the Michet and Lampia clones, harvested in early October. Fermentation in rotary tanks with 14 days of skin contact, malolactic fermentation in steel. Maturation took place over two years in French oak casks and barriques – a classical, respectful vinification that allows the terroir to speak.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- A wine for discerning pairings: Brasato al Barolo, venison loin with lingonberries, truffle risotto, aged Parmigiano Reggiano or beef brisket with horseradish. The structure accommodates powerful, spiced dishes.
- Special Characteristics
- Chiara Boschis‘ 2021 Mosconi displays the hallmark of a modern yet terroir-focused Barolo: dark, concentrated, powerful – and yet with that elegance and structural finesse that distinguish great Nebbiolos. A wine with considerable ageing potential.
