Wine Description for Gewürztraminer 2024 from Domaine Albert Mann

Character
The Domaine Albert Mann in Wettolsheim ranks among the leading biodynamic estates in Alsace and demonstrates impressively with this Gewürztraminer how expressive this often misunderstood grape variety can be. With 13.5% alcohol and moderate residual sweetness, the wine moves within that elegant spectrum between dry and off-dry, which brings out the aromatic intensity of the variety without tipping into heaviness. The Mann family has cultivated a deep understanding of Alsatian terroirs for generations and allows their wines to develop with minimal intervention.
Terroir & Origin
Alsace with its limestone-rich soils and continental climate offers ideal conditions for Gewürztraminer. The Vosges mountains protect the vineyards from Atlantic rainfall and create one of France’s driest climates. Domaine Mann manages parcels in various Grands Crus and vineyard sites around Wettolsheim, where calcareous and clayey soils provide structure and minerality. The biodynamic approach since the 1990s enhances the terroir-true expressiveness of the wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Gewürztraminer – a mutation of Traminer with pink berries – unfolds its full aromatic potential in Alsace. The variety typically displays notes of lychee, rose petals, exotic spices and a characteristic opulence. At Albert Mann, natural yeast fermentation is preferred; the wines mature in traditional Foudres (large wooden casks), which preserves the variety’s characteristic aromatics whilst imparting texture. The moderate residual sweetness develops naturally and balances the intense fruit.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Gewürztraminer is the classic companion to Alsatian cuisine: excellent with Foie Gras, Munster cheese or Flammkuchen. The aromatic richness harmonises wonderfully with Asian cuisine, particularly Thai curries, Sichuan dishes or Vietnamese summer rolls. The wine also demonstrates its versatility with Moroccan tagines or Indian dishes with moderate spice.
