Powerful and full-bodied with concentrated fruit, salty minerality, chalky coolness and integrated acidity; the long, citrus-salty finish invites you to take another sip.
Character
The most powerful and complete representative of the range – a wine of depth, tension and expressiveness that masterfully combines richness with precision.
Pairing
Ideal with pan-fried pike-perch in herb butter, pork fillet in mustard sauce or spicy Hungarian dishes such as chicken paprikash.
Notes
An excursion by Burgenland Blaufränkisch pioneer Roland Velich (Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2023) to Tokaj: Furmint with a rare combination of warm, ripe fruit and cool, salty minerality.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Luminous straw yellow with fine greenish reflections – youthful, clear and promising.
Nose
Profound and expressive, with warm fruit and cool counterpoints at once: ripe pear, white peach, Cantaloupe melon and yellow apple, lifted by freshly grated ginger. Floral notes of acacia and orange blossom, alongside white pepper, allspice and dried marjoram. With air, lavender, zest of orange and mandarin as well as a fine nuttiness of almond and macadamia join in. A hint of light yeast pastry rounds off the picture and lends depth.
Palate
Powerful and full-bodied yet astonishingly focused: the fruit gathers like a beam of light, carried by salt, minerality and a brilliantly integrated acidity. The interplay of warm, ripe fruit with cool, calcareous minerality creates a rare dynamism. As the length increases, salty and citric tones come to the fore and drive the finish. A wine of great balance – fullness without heaviness, pressure without hardness.
Finish
Long, salty and marked by citrus, with persistent freshness and narrative density right through to the very last second.
Terroir & origin
Tokaj is Hungary’s historic wine region, where Furmint has been producing great white wines for centuries. For Moric it is a second home: Roland Velich, who elevated Blaufränkisch to world-class status with his Burgenland estate, has been working together with Hungarian winemakers for years through his “Hidden Treasures” project – and it is from this collaboration that this Furmint originates.
Grape variety & vinification
Furmint, Tokaj’s great white grape variety, here vinified dry at 14.0% vol. The 2024 vintage shows the variety from its powerful, substantial side.
Food recommendations
Power and saltiness call for substance on the plate: pan-fried turbot with beurre blanc, Wiener Schnitzel of veal, Hungarian paprika chicken, gnocchi in sage butter or mature Comté.
Special features
It is remarkable when one of Austria’s most celebrated red wine producers – Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2023 – bottles a white Hungarian wine. The “H” shows Furmint in its most complete, most powerful form: ripe, deep, with personality and tension. A boundary-crossing wine that bears Velich’s signature: origin rather than effect.
