In the glass
Colour
Luminous straw yellow with fine greenish reflections that signal freshness and youthfulness.
Nose
Multi-layered citrus facets ranging from kaffir lime via bergamot to bitter orange, accompanied by candied ginger, fresh herbs such as lemon balm and lemon thyme as well as white pepper. In the background, beeswax emerges along with a cool, stony minerality showing hints of sea spray and oyster shell.
Palate
Lean, racy and carried by impressive mineral tension. The chalky, saline component dominates the palate, while the complete citrus palette – from leaf to juice – provides liveliness. Fine bitter notes and a long, precise finish with herbs and white pepper complete the picture.
Character
A Furmint of great directness and precision that draws its power from tension and minerality rather than opulence. Uncompromisingly dry, with a clear, terroir-driven signature and exceptional freshness.
Pairing
Ideal with fresh oysters, ceviche with lime and coriander or grilled sea bass with lemon thyme. Also an excellent choice for Asian dishes featuring ginger and lemongrass.
Notes
This wine combines the Burgundian elegance for which Moric is celebrated worldwide with the unmistakable minerality of the Tokaj terroir. The extraordinary complexity of the citrus aromas and the almost maritime salinity make it a unique expression of the Furmint grape variety.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Bright straw yellow with fine greenish reflections – as clear and precise as the wine itself.
Nose
A citrus kaleidoscope of rare differentiation: kaffir lime complete with its aromatic leaves, bergamot zest, Meyer lemon and bitter orange. Candied ginger and grapefruit lend spice, while cantaloupe melon and Nashi pear weave in subtle fruitiness. The true core: intensely fragrant herbs – lemon balm, lemon thyme, mint, lemongrass – alongside white pepper and fine notes of beeswax. Beneath lies a cool, stony minerality that evokes cold smoke and oyster shell.
Palate
Uncompromisingly linear, taut and carried by impressive mineral tension. Lean and racy, a chalky, stony line runs across the palate. The citrus aromas reveal their full spectrum – from leaf to zest to flesh. The acidity is present but never dominant; rather, salty, almost steely components shape the profile. Fine bitter compounds combine with the minerality to create enormous length.
Finish
Long and precise: fresh herbs, white pepper and elegant citrus notes return impressively. A finale of remarkable clarity.
Terroir & origin
Roland Velich, the man who placed Burgenland Blaufränkisch on the world map with Moric, here ventures a glance across the border to Tokaj. This region in north-eastern Hungary has been famous for great white wines for centuries – volcanic soils and old vines define the terroir.
Grape variety & vinification
Furmint, Tokaj’s great white grape variety, shows its dry, precise side here. Velich’s Burgundy-influenced signature – restraint rather than opulence – is unmistakable.
Food recommendations
The salty minerality and citrus precision make this wine the ideal companion for oysters, ceviche, grilled zander or goat’s cheese with fresh herbs. It is also an exciting choice with Thai cuisine featuring lime and coriander.
Special characteristics
A Furmint that draws its strength not from volume, but from tension and clarity – entirely in keeping with Velich’s Burgundian approach. The unusual complexity of the citrus aromas sets it apart from the crowd.
