In the glass
Colour
Pale straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections.
Nose
Delicate yellow fruit (white peach, green pear, cantaloupe melon), white blossoms such as daisy, acacia and almond blossom, along with fresh almonds, lemongrass, lemon balm, cold smoke and a fine saltiness with a hint of sourdough.
Palate
Taut and angular with medium, well-integrated acidity; chalky, saline minerality takes centre stage, the fruit remaining restrained, while grapefruit, lime zest and candied ginger linger on the finish.
Character
A linear, cool Furmint full of tension and elegance – its strength lies in the stony texture and the fine balance of blossom, fruit and nut.
Pairing
Ideal with steamed pike-perch, goat’s cheese salad or dishes featuring herbs and citrus notes such as Thai curry.
Notes
Stylistically unmistakable thanks to its cool elegance rather than opulence – a Furmint with a Burgundian signature, carried by mineral depth and a fascinating spiral of fruit, blossom and almond.
Tasting note
Colour & appearance
Pale straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections — clear, cool, a wine that promises lightness even in the glass.
Nose
Fine and unusually still: daisy, acacia and almond blossom, a hint of orange blossom. Behind it, green pear, white peach and some melon — fruit that never becomes loud. With air, cold smoke, lemongrass, lemon balm and a subtle nuttiness like freshly chopped almonds join in. In the finish: light sourdough notes and a fine saltiness.
Palate
Taut, angular, carried by medium, superbly integrated acidity. Yet it is not the fruit that stands at the centre, but rather a stony, salty, almost chalky texture — the wine practically breaks open on the palate, controlled and cool. Grapefruit, lime zest and candied ginger provide freshness and length.
Finish
Long, salty, citric — with a tension from its bitter compounds that refreshes the palate rather than weighing it down, and nutty-floral echoes of the nose.
Terroir & origin
With his Blaufränkisch from Burgenland, Roland Velich has proven that he understands great site-specific wines — Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2023, and James Suckling counts Moric among the nine best wineries worldwide. With this Furmint, he now reaches across the border to Tokaj in Hungary — a logical step for a man who has been collaborating with Hungarian winemakers for some time through his “Hidden Treasures” project.
Grape variety & vinification
A single-varietal Furmint, the great white grape variety of Tokaj, here vinified dry at 13.5% vol. — as a cool, elegant alternative to the region’s sweet tradition.
Food recommendations
The salty tension calls for grilled pike-perch, mussels in white wine broth or sushi. Also an exciting choice with smoked trout, goat’s cheese or an asparagus risotto.
Special features
A Furmint that speaks not through fruit, but through structure and salinity — Velich’s signature of Burgundian restraint, translated into Hungary’s most famous white grape variety. Anyone who knows Tokaj only for its sweet wines will be taught otherwise here.
