Wine Description for Spätburgunder Im Sonnenschein GG 2020 by Ökonomierat Rebholz

Character
The Große Gewächs from the Im Sonnenschein vineyard site represents the pinnacle of Palatinate Spätburgunder. Ökonomierat Rebholz, one of the most tradition-steeped estates in the Southern Palatinate, vinifies here a Pinot Noir of remarkable finesse and depth. The moderate alcohol content of 13% points to a wine that places elegance above power – a deliberate choice for drinkability and precision. The dry orientation underscores the ambition to interpret the terroir unadorned.
Terroir & Origin
The Southern Palatinate around Siebeldingen ranks among the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany. The Im Sonnenschein vineyard site benefits from chalky soils and optimal southerly exposure, which lend the Spätburgunder the ripeness necessary for complex aromatics without losing the cooling minerality. The 2020 vintage was characterised by ideal conditions in the Palatinate – warm days, cool nights – which enabled physiologically ripe grapes whilst preserving freshness.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Rebholz cultivates a traditional, artisanal philosophy that favours minimalist intervention. The Spätburgunder is treated here with respect for the fruit and its provenance. Typical of the house is the eschewing of over-extracted wines in favour of transparency and drinking elegance. One may expect from this GG a silky texture, ripe red fruit and that characteristic Palatinate spice which distinguishes Pinot Noir from this region – earthier and more substantial than in Burgundy, yet with comparable finesse.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This Spätburgunder calls for aromatic poultry such as duck or pigeon, pairs excellently with braised venison or calf’s sweetbread. Mushroom dishes with porcini or truffle as well as aged Comté or Époisses harmonise superbly. The structure also carries tuna or salmon with pine nuts.
