Wine Description for Spätburgunder Im Sonnenschein GG 2020 from Ökonomierat Rebholz

Character
Ökonomierat Rebholz belongs to the absolute elite of German Pinot Noir producers, and the Im Sonnenschein marks the pinnacle of their Große Gewächse. The vineyard site lives up to its name – here wines of crystalline precision and an elegance emerge that recalls Burgundian models rather than the often more opulent German interpretations. The 2020 vintage produced concentrated yet fresh wines despite climatic challenges. With 13% alcohol, this GG moves in a moderate range that prioritises finesse over power.
Terroir & Origin
The Im Sonnenschein vineyard site in Siebeldingen ranks among the most privileged terroirs of the South Palatinate. Here, the Spätburgunder benefits from calcareous soils with shell limestone deposits that lend the wine its characteristic minerality and tension. The mild, almost Mediterranean climate of southern Palatinate is moderated by the higher elevation and cool air currents – ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, which needs warmth for ripeness but coolness for elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Rebholz family works in the vineyard according to biodynamic principles and cultivates old vines with low yields. The wine is matured traditionally in wooden casks, with the estate exercising restraint – the wine, not the wood, should speak. The philosophy of the house aims at transparency and terroir expression, at wines that demand time and reward it. Typical of Rebholz Spätburgunder are the silky texture, precise fruit and a minerality that lends the wine depth and length.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre calls for thoughtful accompaniment: roasted pigeon or duck, calf’s sweetbreads with morels, Coq au Vin or a mature Comté. This Spätburgunder also shows its class with game dishes such as venison loin with lingonberries. The elegance of the wine harmonises particularly well with reduced, not overly heavy sauces.
