Tasting note
Character
An aristocratic Spätburgunder of subtle elegance and puristic directness. With its slender 12.5% abv, Friedrich Keller focuses entirely on Burgundian finesse rather than Baden opulence. The wine displays a delicate structure, cool poise and a smoky, stony note that bears witness to the estate’s masterful signature.
Terroir & Origin
The VDP Große Lage Achkarrer Schlossberg in the Kaiserstuhl is amongst the most spectacular winegrowing sites in Baden. The dark, volcanic rock leaves a profound mark on this steep slope. It absorbs the sun’s warmth and translates the region’s fiery foundation into an exceptionally taut, saline vein in the wine – the proverbial “Baden Burgundy” in its purest form.
Grape Variety & Vinification
As a noble grape variety, Pinot Noir finds ideal conditions on these volcanic soils. The Keller family’s philosophy follows the principle of “as little as possible, as much as necessary”. In the modern, gravity-flow winery, the hand-picked grapes are processed with extreme care. Maturation takes place in the spirit of minimal intervention, aiming to bring the unmistakable vineyard identity into the bottle untamed.
Food Pairings
Given its culinary heritage from the world of fine dining, this Spätburgunder is a versatile dining companion. It pairs magnificently with medium-rare duck breast, classic roast pheasant or delicate veal chops. This dry flagship wine also shines alongside refined mushroom dishes, such as braised king oyster mushrooms.
