Tinto Cão

Tinto Cão is one of the most traditional grape varieties of the Portuguese Douro Valley. Its thick-skinned, small berries yield concentrated musts characterised by a vital acid structure and a tightly woven tannic framework. In the glass, it unfolds a complex bouquet reminiscent of dark wild berries, dried herbs and floral nuances. Due to its late ripening, it retains a vibrant freshness that is of invaluable worth in the hot climate of the valley.

How indispensable this structure is for the great wines of the region is demonstrated by the house of Niepoort. In the dry, profound Quinta de Nápoles, it provides structure alongside Tinta Amarela and Touriga Franca, while in the monumental Port wines of the Bioma range, together with Tempranillo, it guarantees an almost endless ageing potential.
