Niepoort’s Bioma Crusted from old vines represents a classic interpretation of Port winemaking craft. The term „Crusted“ refers to an unfiltered Port that develops a natural sediment over the years – a sign of authentic maturation. With 19.5% alcohol and pronounced residual sweetness, this wine embodies the powerful elegance of the Douro Valley. The designation „Vinha Velha“ underscores its origin from old vineyards that produce grapes of exceptional concentration and complexity.
Terroir & Origin
The Douro Valley is one of Europe’s most spectacular wine regions, characterised by steep slate terraces and extreme climatic conditions. Niepoort, a traditional house with over 180 years of history, manages some of the region’s most valuable parcels. The old vines are deeply rooted in slate soil, which imparts mineral structure and extraordinary longevity to the wines. The continental climate with hot, dry summers concentrates the aromas and creates the characteristic intensity of Portuguese Ports.
Grape Varieties & Vinification
The cuvée from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) and the rare Tinto Cão combines the finest qualities of the Douro. Touriga Franca brings floral notes and structure, Tinta Roriz power and fruit, whilst Tinto Cão – an almost forgotten grape variety – provides finesse and complexity. As a Crusted Port, the wine is vinified using traditional methods, fortified with brandy and aged in bottle, where it develops its characteristic sediment. Niepoort deliberately forgoes filtration to preserve the authentic texture.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Port harmonises beautifully with mature cheeses such as Stilton, Roquefort or Portuguese Serra da Estrela. Equally suitable are dark chocolate desserts, nut pastries or a classic Crème Brûlée. Portuguese tradition also recommends it with almond tart or as a meditative companion by the fireside.
