Niepoort
The man with the wild curls and round glasses has revolutionised Portuguese wine. Niepoort, rooted in the Douro Valley since 1842, today stands for elegant still wines and legendary Ports from biodynamic farming. Where once only heavy Ports were made, Dirk Niepoort shows that the Douro's indigenous varieties can also yield delicate, age-worthy red wines. With the Bioma range, made from old vines, he has set new standards.

From Port House to Pioneer
In 1842 the Dutchman Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort arrived in Porto. Representing the fifth generation, Dirk (born 1964) took over a classic Port house – and turned everything upside down. Instead of just buying grapes, he acquired vineyards. Instead of just making Port, he started making still wines. The result: dry wines now account for 80% of production, and Niepoort is regarded as one of Portugal's most influential producers. His son Daniel carries the vision forward as cellar master, while Dirk tirelessly launches new projects, including in the neighbouring Dão. In 2024 Wine Enthusiast named Niepoort its “European Winery of the Year”, a well-deserved accolade.
Schist, Steep Slopes, Old Vines
The dramatic terraces of the Douro are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across more than 80 hectares, Niepoort farms some of the finest sites, including Quinta de Nápoles with its vines up to 100 years old. The schist stores the heat of the day and releases it at night, while the steep slopes force the roots deep into the rock. Niepoort has farmed organically since 1999, and today all its vineyards are certified biodynamic. Wines from Touriga Franca and other indigenous varieties are traditionally trodden by foot in granite lagares.
Less Intervention, More Expression
“Wine is made in the vineyard” – Dirk's credo shapes every step of the work. Hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, gentle ageing in large wooden casks. The Ports mature in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, the still wines at Quinta de Nápoles. Concentration through low yields, freshness through early picking: Niepoort's wines are the opposite of the overripe blockbusters long associated with the Douro.
From Port to Nat Cool
The range spans everything from rarities to uncomplicated drinking pleasure. The Bioma Crusted shows real mastery with matured wines, while the Nat Cool Tinto from the Dão, served lightly chilled, is the perfect summer red. The still wines, above all the Bioma range, have proved that the Douro can do far more than sweet.
