Niepoort

The wild-haired, round-spectacled maverick has revolutionised Portuguese wine. Niepoort, rooted in the Douro Valley since 1842, today stands for elegant still wines and legendary Ports from biodynamic viticulture. Where once only heavy Port wines were produced, Dirk Niepoort demonstrates that the Douro's indigenous varieties can also yield delicate, age-worthy red wines. With the Bioma range from old vines, he has set new benchmarks.
More about Niepoort
From Port House to Pioneer
In 1842, the Dutchman Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort arrived in Porto. Five generations later, Dirk (*1964) took over a classic Port house – and turned everything upside down. Instead of just buying grapes, he acquired vineyards. Instead of just making Port, he began producing still wines. The result: today, dry wines account for 80% of production, and Niepoort is regarded as one of Portugal's most influential producers. His son Daniel continues the vision as winemaker, whilst Dirk tirelessly launches new projects – including in the neighbouring Dão. In 2024, Niepoort was named "European Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast – a well-deserved accolade.

Schist, Steep Slopes, Old Vines
The dramatic terraces of the Douro are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across more than 80 hectares, Niepoort farms some of the finest vineyard sites, including Quinta de Nápoles with its vines up to 100 years old. The schist stores the day's heat and releases it at night, whilst the steep slopes force the roots deep into the bedrock. Niepoort has worked organically since 1999, and today all vineyards are biodynamically certified. The wines from Touriga Franca and other indigenous varieties are traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares.

Less Intervention, More Expression
"Wine is made in the vineyard" – Dirk's credo shapes every step of the process. Hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, gentle maturation in large wooden casks. The Ports age in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, the still wines at Quinta de Nápoles. Concentration through low yields, freshness through early harvesting: Niepoort's wines are the antithesis of the overripe blockbusters long associated with the Douro.
From Port to Nat Cool
The range spans from rarities to uncomplicated pleasure. The Colheita Port demonstrates mastery in handling aged wines, whilst the Nat Cool Ruby is the perfect summer Port, lightly chilled. The still wines – above all the Bioma line – have proved that the Douro can do more than just sweet.
