  • The Niepoort Porto Bioma Vintage Vinha Velha 2015 is a lusciously sweet Vintage Port from the Douro Valley – vinified from old vines of Touriga Franca, Tempranillo and Tinto Cão, the renowned producer Niepoort showcases here the full depth of Portuguese Port winemaking in a half bottle.
  • 🎨 Colour: Deep, almost opaque ruby-violet with youthful violet reflections at the rim.
  • 👃 Nose: Intense aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and plum, underpinned by delicate notes of violet, dark chocolate, liquorice and a hint of spicy herbs.
  • 👅 Palate: Concentrated and lusciously sweet with a dense core of fruit, silky yet grippy tannins and vibrant freshness; the 20% ABV lend power without ever feeling heavy – leading to a long, spicy-fruity finish.
  • 🎭 Character: A powerful yet refined Vintage Port with great ageing potential – an expression of old vines and the schist terroir of the Douro, far removed from any cloying sweetness.
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: Wonderful with mature blue cheeses such as Stilton, dark chocolate or a walnut-based dessert; also a remarkable experience on its own as a digestif.
  • ✨ Special features: From Niepoort’s Bioma range, with which Dirk Niepoort has set new standards for handling aged wines; the grapes come from biodynamically certified steep-slope vineyards, some with vines up to 100 years old, and are traditionally foot-trodden in granite lagares before the wine matures in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Wine description for Porto Bioma Vintage Vinha Velha Vinho do Porto DOC 2015 375ml by Niepoort

Character
A Vintage Port of rare depth: dense, dark and concentrated. Black berries, violets and dark chocolate, complemented by the spice and tension that old vines bestow. The lusciously sweet richness is supported by a firm structure – a wine that knows it has decades ahead of it. At 20.0% ABV, it is a glass for special moments, not for haste.
Terroir & Origin
The Douro Valley, with its dramatic terraces designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides the backdrop. Rooted deep into the rock on schist soils that store the day’s heat and release it at night, the vines draw their strength from the bedrock. Niepoort cultivates over 80 hectares, including the Quinta de Nápoles with vines up to 100 years old – it is precisely these ‘Vinha Velha’ plots that give this wine its name. All vineyards are biodynamically certified, and the estate has been farming organically since 1999.
Grape Varieties & Vinification
Touriga Franca, Tempranillo and Tinto Cão form the classic Douro blend. Niepoort relies on hand harvesting, traditional foot treading in granite lagares and spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts – Dirk Niepoort’s credo being that wine is made in the vineyard. The Ports then mature in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. The fact that the Wine Enthusiast named Niepoort ‘European Winery of the Year’ in 2024 underscores the stature of this house, which has existed since 1842 and today sees son Daniel shaping its wines as head winemaker.
Food Pairings
The classic match: Stilton or aged blue cheese – the sweetness of the wine tempers the saltiness. Equally convincing with dark chocolate, chocolate tart or baked figs. For a more purist approach, serve it alongside walnuts and dried fruits. Served slightly below room temperature, it also makes a sublime solitary conclusion to a long meal – a glass that invites conversation rather than accompaniment.
