Wine description for Porto Garrafeira decanted 1993 bottled 2018 1983 by Niepoort

Colour & Appearance
Deep, luminous mahogany with amber reflexes at the rim – the colour of a Port wine that carries four decades of history within it. Brilliant clarity despite its advanced age.
Nose
An olfactory masterpiece: dried figs, dates and candied orange meld with walnut liqueur, dark chocolate and a hint of tobacco. Beneath shimmer caramel, roasted hazelnuts and a fascinating iodine note that evokes old libraries and leather. With air exposure, orange zest and cloves develop.
Palate
Despite its high residual sweetness, this Port is remarkably elegant and balanced. The 20% alcohol is perfectly integrated into a silky, almost oily texture. Plum paste, candied cherries and fig jam meet espresso, dark chocolate and a hint of balsamic vinegar. The acidity is surprisingly present and prevents any heaviness – a testament to the extraordinary quality of the base wine from 1983.
Finish
Endless, complex, meditative. Nutty notes, orange peel and a touch of salt linger for minutes. The sweetness merges with a fine bitterness of cocoa beans into a perfect finale.
Particularities
The Garrafeira category is the rarest and most demanding in the Port wine universe. The wine was vinified in 1983, matured for ten years in large wooden casks, was decanted into glass demijohns in 1993 and stored there for a further 25 years before being bottled in 2018. This method combines the oxidative maturity of Tawny with the freshness of Vintage. A rarity from the house of Niepoort, renowned for its uncompromising, traditional Ports. The cuvée from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and the rare Tinto Cão comes from old vineyards in the Douro Valley.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Excellent with Stilton or Roquefort, dark chocolate tart, walnut cake or crème brûlée. Also a memorable experience enjoyed solo as a meditation in a glass.
