Wine Description for Porto Garrafeira decanted 1993 bottled 2018 1983 by Niepoort

Colour & Appearance
A deep, mature mahogany with bright amber highlights at the rim.
Nose
The nose reveals a fascinating tertiary display: complex and dense, aromas of dried figs, dates and toasted almonds rise up. Beneath lie fine nuances of cigar box, fine saddle leather, dark chocolate and a hint of dried orange peel.
Palate
On the palate, this Garrafeira is lusciously sweet, yet immediately impresses with its timeless freshness and breathtaking balance. The rich notes of toffee, raisins and dark spice cling to a silky texture. Despite the 20.0% ABV, the wine never feels heavy, but rather masterfully structured, carried by the indigenous grape varieties Touriga Franca, Tempranillo and Tinto Cão.
Finish
Infinitely long, multi-layered and elegant. A paragon of mocha, walnut and the finest precious wood lingers for minutes.
Terroir & Origin
Sourced from the dramatic Douro Valley, where the vines take root in poor, steep slate sites. The slate stores the day’s heat and imparts a deep, rock-infused minerality to the grapes alongside concentration. The Port house Niepoort – named “European Winery of the Year” in 2024 – has stood for this unmistakable profile of origin since 1842.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Cuvée of the traditional varieties Touriga Franca, Tempranillo and Tinto Cão. Harvesting is done by hand. Following vinification, the Garrafeira – an absolute rarity in the Port universe – initially matures briefly in wooden casks before achieving its ultimate perfection over decades in large glass demijohns.
Pairing Recommendations
An aristocratic pleasure alongside long-aged Stilton or Roquefort, a refined Tarte Tatin, as well as desserts featuring dark Valrhona chocolate and nuts. It is also a revelation served on its own as a contemplative post-dinner drink.
Key Features
Garrafeira is arguably the rarest category of Port. The combination of traditional craftsmanship, the legendary 1983 vintage and decades of glass maturation makes this Port a monumental collector’s piece full of finesse.
