Niepoort’s Porto Bioma Vintage from old vines represents the authentic soul of the Douro Valley. With 19.5% alcohol and pronounced residual sweetness, this Vintage Port embodies the house’s classic style: concentrated, structured and with impressive ageing potential. The blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and the rare Tinto Cão yields a Port of extraordinary complexity and depth. The 2016 vintage is considered excellent in the Douro, with ideal conditions for high-quality Vintage Ports.
Terroir & Origin
The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions. The Vinha Velha – old vines – are rooted in the steep slate terraces of the Douro Superior, where extreme temperature fluctuations and sparse soils force the vines to concentrate their fruit. Niepoort, a traditional family business with over 180 years of history, manages these parcels with the greatest respect for nature. The „Bioma“ concept underscores the focus on biological diversity and sustainable management of these valuable old vine stocks.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The blend unites three characterful Douro grape varieties: Touriga Franca brings elegance and floral notes, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) provides structure and spice, whilst the rare Tinto Cão contributes finesse and longevity. The grapes are traditionally trodden by foot in Lagares – shallow granite troughs – before fermentation is halted by the addition of brandy. Maturation takes place in large wooden casks, which allows the Port to retain its fruit intensity whilst building structure.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This powerful Vintage Port harmonises beautifully with mature Stilton or Roquefort, with dark chocolate of high cocoa content or nut-based pastries. Also an excellent choice with Crème Brûlée or Tarte Tatin. In Portugal, it is traditionally enjoyed with Queijo da Serra, the creamy sheep’s cheese of the region.
