Niepoorts Porto Bioma Vintage from old vines represents the authentic soul of the Douro Valley. With 19.5% Alcohol and pronounced residual sweetness, this Vintage Port epitomises the classic style of the house: concentrated, structured and with impressive ageing potential. The cuvée from Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and the rare Tinto Cão results in a port of exceptional complexity and depth. The 2016 vintage is considered excellent in the Douro, with ideal conditions for high-quality Vintage Ports.

Terroir & origin

The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world. The Vinha Velha - old vines - are rooted in the steep slate terraces of the Douro Superior, where extreme temperature fluctuations and poor soils force the vines to concentrate. Niepoort, a traditional family business with over 180 years of history, cultivates these plots with the utmost respect for nature. The „Bioma“ concept emphasises the focus on Biological diversity and Sustainable management of these valuable old stocks.

Grape variety & vinification

The assemblage combines three Douro grape varieties with strong character: Touriga Franca brings elegance and floral notes, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) provides structure and flavour, while the rare Tinto Cão for finesse and longevity. The grapes are traditionally Lagares - The wine is then fermented in flat granite vats - stomped with the feet - before the fermentation is stopped by adding brandy. The wine is matured in large wooden barrels, which allows the port to retain its fruity intensity and build up structure at the same time.

Food pairing suggestions

This powerful Vintage Port harmonises perfectly with matured Stilton or Roquefort, to dark chocolate with a high cocoa content or Nut biscuits. Also to Crème brûlée or tarte tatin an excellent choice. In Portugal, it is traditionally enjoyed with Queijo da Serra, the creamy sheep's cheese of the region.
