Wine Description for Quinta de Nápoles Douro DOC 2018 by Niepoort

Character
Niepoort, the venerable Port house based in Vila Nova de Gaia, has established itself over recent decades as a producer of outstanding still Douro wines. The Quinta de Nápoles embodies the elegance and finesse for which the house is renowned under Dirk Niepoort. With a moderate 13% alcohol, this wine presents itself deliberately restrained and approachable – a refreshing alternative to the often powerful Douro red wines. The blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão showcases the diversity of the indigenous grape varieties of this unique region.
Terroir & Origin
The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s oldest demarcated wine regions, offers extreme conditions: steep schist slopes, hot summers and cool nights. Quinta de Nápoles lies in this dramatic landscape, where the vines must root deep into weathered schist. These sparse soils and the continental climate shape wines of distinctive minerality and structure. The 2018 vintage is considered well-balanced in the Douro, with good freshness despite the warmth.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Tinta Amarela brings fruit and body, Touriga Franca contributes elegance and floral notes, whilst Tinto Cão, a rare and prized variety, imparts finesse and ageing potential. Niepoort’s philosophy favours restrained extraction and respectful handling of the fruit. The moderate alcohol content suggests an earlier harvest that preserves natural acidity and emphasises freshness – a hallmark of the house, which prioritises drinkability over opulence.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine calls for the cuisine of its homeland: grilled bacalhau, Cozido à Portuguesa or herb-braised lamb shoulder. Yet the elegance also harmonises beautifully with duck breast, braised beef or aged Manchego. The vibrant structure makes it an ideal companion for hearty stews and cured meat specialities.
