Wine Description for Côtes du Rhône Villages Visan Rouge AOC 2022 from Roche-Audran
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep violet-red with an almost black core and luminous purple reflections at the rim – a wine that visually celebrates its youth and vitality.
- Nose
- Intense and inviting. Dark cherries and blackcurrant dominate, underpinned by blueberries and elderberry. These are joined by animating floral notes: lilac, lavender and wild roses, which underscore the Mediterranean character. In the background, liquorice, tar and graphite emerge – a complexity rarely found at this price point.
- Palate
- Smooth and charming with succulent fruit fullness. The fine-grained tannins caress the palate, whilst a refreshing acidity provides vibrancy. An elegant minerality and cool precision lend the wine remarkable drinkability despite its southern provenance. At just 12.5% alcohol, it never feels heavy or intrusive.
- Finish
- Medium-length with lingering herbal notes and a fine spice that recalls the surrounding garrigue. The fruit remains present without dominating.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard west of Visan at 140 metres elevation lies in the heart of the garrigue. The alluvial terraces, over 80,000 years old, consist of more than 60% stones – a barren, dry soil that forces the vines towards concentration. The natural vegetation of countless herbs and wild plants profoundly shapes the character of this wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- A blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah, vinified separately and aged according to biodynamic principles. Minimal sulphur use, no chemical additives. After six months‘ ageing in concrete vats, the wine is deliberately bottled young – an approach that prioritises freshness and fruit over structure and longevity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ratatouille, lamb stew with Provençal herbs, grilled aubergines, tapenade, bouillabaisse or Provençal herb sausage. Ideal with anything Mediterranean, herb-rich and aromatic.
- Special Features
- A wine from Vincent Rochettes‘ grandmother’s vineyard, proving that biodynamic viticulture and accessibility need not be opposites. Drink it young and lightly chilled.
