Mourvèdre

Mourvèdre grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Monastrell (Spain), Mataro (Australia)

Mourvèdre is the variety for the patient. Late-ripening, thick-skinned, with a tendency towards reductive notes that only transform into something fascinating after years: leather, game, undergrowth, Mediterranean herbs. Often closed and tannic in its youth, Mourvèdre needs time – and warmth during ripening.

Château de Pibarnon in Bandol demonstrates what Mourvèdre can achieve on limestone and with maritime proximity – wines of extraordinary longevity. In the southern Rhône, Mourvèdre is often the structure-giving partner in Grenache blends, such as at Marcoux or La Nerthe.
