Wine Description for Barolo Pira Riserva Etichetta Nera DOCG 2006 1500ml by Roagna
- Character
- A monumental, deeply traditional wine that celebrates the art of patience. This Riserva from the excellent vintage 2006 – presented here in the venerable magnum bottle – is an intellectual masterpiece: delicate and refined, yet sustained by an architectural structure built to last for decades. A Barolo that does not court favour, but rather fascinates with aristocratic restraint and profound, complex aromatics.
- Terroir & Origin
- The grapes come from the historic vineyard site Pira in Castiglione Falletto, which has been owned by the Roagna family since 1989. Luca and Alfredo Roagna tend this vineyard with uncompromising respect for nature: the vineyard sites are grass-covered and biodiverse, completely free from pesticides and herbicides. This living ecosystem transmits the pure, unadulterated minerality of the soil directly into the wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, this wine embodies the soul of traditional Piedmont. In Roagna’s cellar, modernity gives way to deceleration: rather than maturing in barriques, the wine ages for many years in large wooden casks and cement tanks. This extremely slow maturation allows the grape variety to breathe without being dominated by wood aromas, whilst preserving the vibrant acidity and powerful tannins of Nebbiolo.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This characterful, dry Barolo demands cuisine of equal depth and honesty. It is the perfect companion to a classic Brasato al Barolo, refined dishes with white truffle, noble game such as venison loin, or an intensely spiced, aged Castelmagno cheese.
