Wine Description for Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco DOC 2023 by Vietti

Character
The Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco from Vietti embodies the accessible side of Nebbiolo – that grape variety which, in its grand Barolo and Barbaresco expressions, often demands years of patience. Here the variety reveals itself as youthful, fresh and inviting, without denying its Piedmontese soul. The name „Perbacco“ – a Piedmontese exclamation of surprise – already hints at the playful character of this wine, which is conceived as an entry point into the world of Nebbiolo.
Terroir & Origin
The Langhe hillside landscape south of Alba forms the heart of Piedmontese winemaking. Vietti, established in Castiglione Falletto since 1919, ranks among the most tradition-rich producers in the region. For the Perbacco, grapes from various Langhe vineyard sites are used that do not meet the strict requirements for Barolo or Barbaresco – whether due to younger vines or less favourably exposed sites. This provenance enables earlier drinking pleasure at more moderate prices, without compromises on quality.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Nebbiolo, the capricious diva of Piedmont, reveals its charming side in the Langhe variant. The variety retains its characteristic firm tannins and vibrant acidity, but is rendered more supple through shorter maceration periods and ageing in larger wooden casks or only partially in barriques. The 2023 vintage, still in its youth, promises the typical aromas of red berries, rose petals and earthy notes that distinguish Nebbiolo, in an immediately enjoyable form.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Nebbiolo is the ideal companion to everyday Piedmontese cuisine: Vitello tonnato, Agnolotti del plin with butter and sage, Brasato al Barolo or a Risotto ai funghi porcini. It also harmonises beautifully with aged cheese varieties such as Toma Piemontese or a mid-aged Parmigiano. The combination of structure and freshness makes it versatile – from the salumi platter to roasted veal fillet.
