Wine Description for Nackenheim Riesling trocken VDP Erste Lage 2023 by Kühling-Gillot

Colour & Appearance
Pale, radiant golden yellow with vibrant green reflections – a Riesling that already displays its youthfulness and freshness in the glass.
Nose
Mineralically complex and still rather reserved, this young Erste Lage Riesling reveals itself gradually. The bouquet displays a smoky, stony texture, shaped by the Rotliegend clay slate. Juicy apricots and orange zest meld with a hint of ginger and a bouquet of meadow herbs. With air contact, the yellow fruit character increasingly unfolds – invigorating and multifaceted.
Palate
Juicy and charming, the wine flows across the tongue, carried by perfectly integrated acidity. Saline notes – the signature of the Roter Hang – run through the palate and lend the wine a maritime freshness. The fine tannins from the skins provide structure and grip, enhance the complexity and deliver remarkable length. A Riesling with substance and ageing potential.
Finish
Long, mineralic and with sustained freshness. The stony spice and saline minerality linger, accompanied by delicate herbal notes.
Terroir & Origin
The legendary clay slate bank of the Roter Hang in Nackenheim fundamentally shapes this wine. Here, iron-rich Rotliegend rock surfaces and imparts its characteristic mineralic character to the wines. Kühling-Gillot now owns parcels in all the important vineyard sites of this privileged Rheinhessen enclave, and the vines have reached the ideal age for great wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling, aged in large old wooden casks with extended lees contact. This traditional vinification adds additional texture and complexity to the wine without masking the fruit.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This characterful Riesling calls for aromatic, intense cuisine: pan-fried monkfish with lemongrass, scallops with ginger butter, Thai curry with seafood, smoked eel, zander with herb crust or also aged Comté.
Special Features
A VDP Erste Lage Riesling that already offers drinking pleasure now, but will gain in complexity over the next 5-8 years. Moderate 12.5% alcohol and perfect balance make it a classic food companion.
