Wine Description for Riesling Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott GG 2022 by Battenfeld-Spanier
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant, intense golden yellow in the glass – a Riesling that announces its substance and maturity visually from the outset.
- Nose
- After generous aeration, a fascinating bouquet reveals itself with citrus and grapefruit, underpinned by green apple and verbena. The mineral character is unmistakable: oyster shells, a hint of roasted crustacean shell and soy sauce lend this GG an almost maritime complexity. Mint provides additional freshness. Youthfully reserved, yet promising.
- Palate
- Gripping and precise. The wine glides across the tongue with the intensity of lemon tossed in salt – a description that perfectly captures its saline minerality. Vibrantly fresh, cool, elegant. Every sip possesses the crystal-clear purity of a mountain spring. The citrus aromas and fresh herbs are omnipresent, paired with a remarkable umami component that leaves a lasting impression on the palate.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral with considerable umami. The aftertaste positively demands the next sip – a sign of great drinking appeal despite all its seriousness.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Schwarze Herrgott lies at the beginning of the Zellertal basin on pure limestone rock. The steep, narrow fault edge protects the vines from rain and extreme sun exposure – a microclimate that favours freshness and elegance. The vineyard site ranks among Germany’s oldest documented wine-growing locations, first established around 700 AD by Saint Philip of Zell as an altar wine vineyard. The black cross that gave the vineyard its name stands symbolically for centuries of winemaking tradition.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling from limestone soils, vinified dry with moderate 12.5% alcohol. Battenfeld-Spanier showcases here the cool, mineral side of Rheinhessen’s great vineyard sites.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The maritime aromatics and umami character make this Riesling ideal for mackerel with cucumber and mustard seeds, prawns in almond crust with salt lemon sauce or ramen noodles with Thai curry sauce. Also a brilliant choice with oysters or sushi.
- Special Notes
- Definitely decant for several hours and enjoy from large Burgundy glasses! Enormous ageing potential – this 2022 vintage will develop considerably over the coming years.
