Wine Description for Riesling Mölsheim „Treasure Collection“ VDP Erste Lage 2019 from Battenfeld-Spanier

Colour & Appearance
Clear golden yellow in the glass – a colour that already hints at the maturity and depth of this wine. The brilliance speaks to the precise work in the cellar.
Nose
Here reveals itself a stone wine of remarkable clarity and precision. The aromatics combine mineral coolness with ripe fruit: lemon and grapefruit zest, along with fresh grapefruit juice, verbena and mint. Subtle notes of black tea and wax lend the bouquet additional complexity. A wine that does not deny its origins.
Palate
Thoroughly dry, with a fascinating textural dimension reminiscent of rock dust. At the same time, this Riesling possesses remarkable smoothness and charm. Gripping, dense and compact, it presents itself, in the depths minerally bubbling, mouth-watering salty, stony and smoky. The balance between structural tension and sensual fruit is masterfully achieved – a textural wine that never comes across as cool or closed.
Finish
Long and mineral, with persistent salinity and a fine smokiness that lingers for a long time.
Terroir & Origin
The Mölsheim vineyards lie higher and cooler than the better-known Hohen-Sülzen sites. The soils are stony and sparse, characterised by pure limestone with only minimal humus and scree cover – ideal conditions for mineral-driven Rieslings with tension and precision.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested and spontaneously fermented, the wine matured until the following spring in large wooden casks on fine lees. The Treasure Collection subsequently rested in the winery’s new maturation cellar – additional bottle age that gave the wine depth and integration.
Food Pairing Recommendations
An ideal companion to roasted turbot, scallops with lemon butter, calf’s sweetbread or creamy goat’s cheese. Also an exciting pairing with Asian dishes with ginger and lemongrass.
Special Features
H. O. Spanier demonstrates here that a VDP Erste Lage can certainly have the stature of a Grand Cru. A wine that already offers drinking pleasure now, but also has years of development ahead of it.
