  • The Riesling Hohen-Sülzen VDP Erste Lage 2025 by Battenfeld-Spanier is a dry Rheinhessen single-vineyard Riesling from the limestone and shell limestone of the Wonnegau — slender, cool and with an almost saline minerality.
  • 🎨 Colour: Pale, clear straw yellow with a fine sheen in the glass.
  • 👃 Aroma: Citrus zest, green apple and white blossoms, accompanied by a cool streak of wet limestone and a hint of herbal spice.
  • 👅 Palate: Taut and dry with a defining, fine acidity; the chalky origin lends structure, depth and a long, slightly saline finish.
  • 🎭 Character: A calm, cool exponent of German Riesling artistry — more substance and precision than opulent fruit, with pronounced terroir expression.
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: With trout meunière, asparagus with lemon hollandaise or a fresh goat’s cheese tart.
  • ✨ Particularities: Sourced entirely from the Erste Lage Hohen-Sülzen on limestone and shell limestone; Battenfeld-Spanier has been working biodynamically since 2005, with spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and stainless steel tanks as well as minimal sulphur use — the cellar as a place of accompaniment, not correction.

Wine description for Riesling Hohen-Sülzen VDP Erste Lage 2025 by Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
A slender, cool Riesling of almost saline tension – this is how the estate itself describes the style of its Hohen-Sülzen wines from limestone. Dry, finely balanced at 12.5% alcohol, it reveals citrus fruit, cool stony notes and a taut, linear texture. Not a wine of opulence, but one of clarity and nerve.
Terroir & Origin
Hohen-Sülzen lies in the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen, Battenfeld-Spanier’s home turf. Here, limestone and shell limestone shape the wines – soils that lend the Riesling a cooler, tighter character than, say, the weathered Rotliegendes of the Roter Hang, where the sister estate Kühling-Gillot tends its vineyard sites. This constellation of two VDP estates under one roof is unique in Germany: Rotliegendes in the north, limestone in the south, one signature.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling in its limestone-influenced Rheinhessen expression. Hans Oliver Spanier has worked biodynamically since 2005; the wines ferment spontaneously in large wooden casks and stainless steel tanks, and intervention in the cellar remains minimal – little sulphur, no fining agents. The cellar sees itself as a place of accompaniment, not correction. A Late Release of this wine appears in the Treasure Collection once it reaches its drinking maturity.
Food Pairings
The saline tension and cool acidity call for precise cuisine: ceviche, oysters, sushi or a simple zander fillet. With asparagus and hollandaise sauce or a young goat’s cheese, too, you can see just how well limestone Riesling and fine acidity play together. If you have patience, give it a few years – limestone Rieslings of this calibre gain depth and smoky complexity with bottle ageing.
