In the glass

  1. Colour

Pale straw yellow with distinct green reflections.

  2. Nose

Complex and still youthfully closed; with air, citrus notes, green apple, lemon balm and elderflower emerge — above them pure slate, intense stony minerality and smoky hints.

  3. Palate

Fine sweetness meets refreshing acidity and delicate citrus-apple fruit; a light 7.5% ABV ensures tremendous drinkability.

  4. Character

A classic, precise Mosel Spätlese with depth and nobility — still closed for now, this wine will mature beautifully over the coming years.

  5. Pairing

Spicy Asian cuisine, desserts with stone fruit or citrus, and mature blue cheese.

  6. Notes

Terraced steep vineyard site with around 80% ancient, ungrafted Riesling vines; organically farmed, purely manual work and gentle cellar techniques with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel — a mirror of the blue Devonian slate.

Tasting note

Colour & appearance
Pale straw yellow with distinct green reflections – youthful, clear and brilliant.
Nose
Still closed, as befits a young Spätlese. With a little air, citrus fruit, green apple, lemon balm and elderflower emerge. Dominant, however, is the pure slate: an intense, stony minerality with fine smoky hints that lend the wine nobility.
Palate
The finest sweetness, carried by a taut, refreshing acidity. Alongside this, delicate citrus and apple fruit, light on its feet at just 7.5% vol. – the classic Mosel balancing act between sweetness and precision. Those who drink it now will experience freshness; those who wait will be rewarded with a deeper intertwining of fruit and slate. A few years of patience are well worth it.
Finish
Long, cool and distinctly mineral; the sweetness departs cleanly, the slate remains.
Terroir & origin
The Enkircher Ellergrub on the Middle Mosel is one of the region’s quiet treasures: a terraced steep vineyard site on blue and grey Devonian slate, with gradients of up to 70% – here every task in the vineyard is pure manual labour. Less famous than the great names of the Middle Mosel, the site possesses their full potential.
Grape variety & vinification
Thoroughbred Riesling from predominantly ungrafted vines, many of them over 100 years old – a vine stock that hardly any other Mosel estate possesses on such a scale. Spontaneous fermentation in a 500-litre stainless steel tank, entirely without fining or clarifying agents, racking also in steel. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler run their four-hectare estate completely independently and farm it organically.
Food recommendations
The appealing tension between sweetness and acidity makes this wine ideal for Asian dishes with chilli heat, such as Thai curry or Sichuan cuisine. It is also a fine choice with mature blue cheese, smoked trout or a lemon dessert.
Special features
Since 2005, career changers Weiser and Künstler have been farming their parcels – around 80% of them planted with ungrafted vines, some over 100 years old, the highest proportion of this kind on the Mosel. As members of the “Klitzekleiner Ring”, they campaign for the preservation of old Riesling vines. This Spätlese is the result: a wine of rare, vibrant tension that will only reveal what it truly holds in a few years’ time. Until then, it remains a promising enigma in the glass – and every open bottle a test of its mettle.
