  • The Riesling Réserve vom Kalkstein trocken “Treasure Collection” 2021 by Battenfeld-Spanier is a mature Rheinhessen Riesling that, as a Late Release, only leaves the estate at its optimal drinking maturity – chalk-driven, cool and precise.
  • 🎨 Colour: Pale golden yellow with greenish reflections, hinting at the onset of maturity.
  • 👃 Aroma: Citrus fruit and yellow apple meet herbal spice, flint and the cool chalky note of the limestone.
  • 👅 Palate: Lean and linear, with taut acidity, saline precision and a long, mineral finish – dry and cool on the palate.
  • 🎭 Character: A Riesling at its peak: ageing in the Treasure Collection cellar lends it depth and composure without losing its cool freshness.
  • 🍽️ Food pairing: Ideal with pike-perch or sole in a light sauce, with white poultry and with mature hard cheese.
  • ✨ Special features: Part of the “Treasure Collection” by H.O. Spanier – aged in the estate’s own cellar until perfectly ready to drink and only then released. Battenfeld-Spanier has been farming biodynamically since 2005; the limestone soils of the Wonnegau and Zellertal shape this taut, saline style.

Wine description for Riesling Réserve vom Kalkstein trocken “Treasure Collection” 2021 by Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
A Riesling that has gained with time. The Treasure Collection is Hans Oliver Spanier’s ageing-cellar project: wines rest there under ideal conditions until they reach their peak, and are released as a Late Release. What you find in the glass is slender, cool and almost saline — a dry Riesling of precise tension, in which minerality and taut acidity set the pace. Citrus fruit and bright herbs stand out against a finely structured, chalky undertone.
Terroir & Origin
Battenfeld-Spanier cultivates vineyard sites in the Wonnegau and Zellertal in Rheinhessen, where limestone soils define the landscape. In contrast to the Rotliegend of the Roter Hang, home to the sister estate Kühling-Gillot, the limestone lends the Riesling a different texture: tauter, cooler, with saline precision. The Réserve bears this signature too — origin as an argument, not merely as a label.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling, the great German white grape variety, in its most linear form. The estate has been certified biodynamic since 2005; preparations 500 and 501 are applied regularly, and the lunar phases determine the rhythm in the vineyard. In the cellar, restraint is the guiding principle: spontaneous fermentation in large wooden casks and stainless steel tanks, minimal sulphur use, no fining. The 2021 vintage, cool and precise, suits this style perfectly.
Food Pairings
The saline coolness and the clear vein of acidity make this wine the ideal everyday wine for fine cuisine: with poached sole fillet, trout with almond butter or sashimi. Asparagus with hollandaise sauce, goat’s cheese on a lukewarm lentil salad or a simple risotto with lemon and herbs also find a worthy counterpart in it. If you open it today, you will drink a wine at the peak of its maturity — and if you have patience, you may hope for further nuances.
