Wine Description for Riesling Hartstein 2022 by HM Lang

Colour & Appearance
Pale yellow with green reflexes and silvery rim – a Riesling that reveals its youthfulness and freshness already in the glass.
Nose
Closed and reserved at first, as befits a wine of pure granite. With patience and air, jasmine and lilac unfold, followed by a distinctive stone minerality – wet pebbles after summer rain. These are joined by green apples, lime zest and ripe green pears. A bouquet that places precision before opulence.
Palate
Crystalline, razor-sharp, uncompromising. This Riesling knows no fat, no flattery – instead, the sinewy elegance of a finely trained body. Glass-clear on the attack, with delicate yet precise fruit extract. The acidity is the backbone: tense, vibrant, endless. Remarkable how much structure and length HM Lang draws from just 10% alcohol – a masterclass in finesse.
Finish
Long, stony, with sustained freshness. The minerality lingers, accompanied by a hint of citrus peel and saline spice.
Terroir & Origin
The Riede Lemberg in Kremstal provides the dramatic foundation: pure granite, barely half a metre of soil above it. Around 30-year-old vines struggle through the barren subsoil – you taste every centimetre of this effort.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Hand-harvested, biodynamic viticulture, two years on fine lees, unfiltered. HM Lang gives the wine time and space to articulate its origin – without cosmetic intervention.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Sashimi, oysters, pike-perch with herb foam, goat’s cheese or simply fresh bread with salted butter. A wine that rewards clarity and reduction on the plate.
Special Characteristics
A Riesling that proves greatness does not come from alcohol, but from precision, origin and the courage to have an edge. Not for lovers of soft, flattering wines – but a must for anyone seeking Riesling in its purest, most uncompromising form.
