Wine description for Aus den Gärten Riesling Federspiel dry 2024 by Nikolaihof

Character
Nikolaihof has stood for biodynamic viticulture in its purest form for generations – since 1971, long before it became a trend. This Federspiel Riesling embodies the classic Wachau signature: clear, precise and marked by impressive minerality. The Federspiel category designates medium-bodied wines with natural alcohol content between 11.5 and 12.5 per cent – a perfect balance between freshness and substance.
Terroir & Origin
The Wachau is among the most prestigious Riesling regions in the world. Nikolaihof manages its vineyards according to Demeter standards, which means: no synthetic fertilisers, no herbicides, instead living soils and natural preparations. The steep terraces along the Danube benefit from primary rock weathering soils – predominantly gneiss and mica schist – which give the Riesling its characteristic tension and salinity. The Pannonian climate with cool nights provides the necessary freshness.
Grape variety & Vinification
Riesling shows its mineral and spicy side in the Wachau, quite different from the fruit-driven Mosel varieties. Nikolaihof works with spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention – a philosophy that allows the wine to express its terroir unfiltered. The wines mature traditionally in large wooden casks, which provides structure without masking the fruit. The 2024 vintage benefits from a balanced growing year with good acidity structure.
Food Pairing Recommendations
This Federspiel is a versatile food companion: classically with freshwater fish such as pike-perch or char, excellent with asparagus with hollandaise sauce, but also with roasted poultry or Wiener Schnitzel. The minerality harmonises beautifully with goat’s cheese and light Asian dishes. A wine that accompanies Austrian cuisine just as well as modern vegetable-focused cooking.
