Wine Description for Riesling Clos Häuserer 2022 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Colour & Appearance
Radiant golden yellow in the glass – a colour that already announces the ripeness and concentration of this extraordinary Riesling.
Nose
Initially lean and playful, then increasingly complex: lemon, lime and grapefruit meet green apple, underpinned by a cool, chalky minerality. With air contact, ginger, anise and dry biscuit unfold, along with maritime notes of oyster shells and seaweed – a fascinating interplay of aromas between fruit and terroir.
Palate
Here the true greatness of this wine reveals itself: brilliant acidity, vibrant freshness and a juicy backbone that runs through the palate. The citrus fruits return, accompanied by a saline note and a fine bitterness that lends tension and elegance. Despite 13.5% alcohol, the wine never feels heavy, but rather precise and focused.
Finish
Long-lasting with saline citrus freshness and appetite-stimulating structure. The fine bitterness in the aftertaste underscores the dry, mineral character – a finish that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Clos Häuserer is a 1.2-hectare monopoly vineyard site below the Grand Cru Hengst in Wintzenheim. Planted with Riesling in 1973 by Léonard Humbrecht, it sits on Oligocene limestone – so-called conglomerate limestone, cemented in iron-rich sandstone with marl components. These soils give the wine its characteristic minerality and drought resistance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Riesling from 50-year-old vines, vinified in the typical Zind-Humbrecht style with biodynamic viticulture and natural yeast management.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Gratinéed oysters with grapefruit fillets, beetroot from salt crust with aged balsamic, quail breast with rosehip, lemon and tarragon or generally dishes with fresh components and concentrated sauces.
Special Features
This wine requires air and time – several hours of decanting and a large glass are essential. After a few days of opening, it gains further in expression. A Riesling with considerable ageing potential.
