Wine Description for Riesling Clos Häuserer 2019 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant, deep golden yellow with crystalline luminosity – a wine that already promises much in the glass.
- Nose
- The nose displays captivating complexity: ripe peach, apple and pear meet succulent pineapple. Over this lay fascinating smoky notes that lend the wine an almost mineral tension. The limestone of the subsoil announces itself unmistakably with a charming, almost austere minerality – a hint of flint that elegantly breaks the fruity charm.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine unfolds with great precision: gripping salinity and a brilliant, vibrant acidity give the wine tension and depth. The chalky minerality from the nose continues consistently and gives the wine its distinctive, almost ascetic character. Yet it remains ever elegant – bone-dry, light-footed, of fine texture.
- Finish
- Long, stimulating, remarkably saline-mineral. The finish points to extraordinary ageing potential – this wine has much more to say. Those wishing to drink it now: decant for several hours, use a large glass, bring patience.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Clos Häuserer is a 1.2-hectare monopole vineyard in Wintzenheim in Alsace, established in 1973 by Léonard Humbrecht. The bedrock – Oligocene siliceous marl limestone, identical to that of the Grand Cru Hengst – is covered by an unusually thick layer of topsoil. This ensures cool roots, no drought stress whatsoever, and slow, even ripening. A vineyard with the ambitions of a Grand Cru.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Riesling, harvested at perfect ripeness in the 2019 vintage. Fermentation proceeded – as is typical for this geology – slowly and deliberately. The wine was aged bone-dry, without any residual sugar. 13.0% alcohol, completely dry.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- The salinity and minerality of the wine call for dishes with depth and structure: parsnip blinis with smoked salmon and dill cream, a spicy horseradish soup with caramelised apple or the elegant Atlantic skate with Noilly-Prat sauce and peppermint oil – all ideal companions for this complex, mineral-driven Riesling.
- Special Features
- A wine that proves Zind-Humbrecht produces world-class Riesling beyond the Grand Cru sites. The Clos Häuserer 2019 is a prime example of Alsatian Riesling of the highest precision – dry, mineral, timeless. Drink now with decanting, or confidently age until 2035+.
