Wine profile
From the house of Olivier Humbrecht comes the Clos Häuserer, an exquisite Riesling from a small but unique 1.2 hectare vineyard that was brought to life in 1973. This special piece of land, where high-quality and long-lasting wines can develop, was once a collection of plots that were joined together to form an impressively coherent square. It towers over the greater Hengst area and nests below the Häuserer road. The vineyard rests on the same parent rock as Hengst - a pebbly marly limestone from the Oligocene, but with a much more extensive overburden. Despite the summer warmth of the microclimate, the cool soil keeps the vines in balance and prevents drought stress.
Maturing process
The signature of the geology at Clos Häuserer is also evident in the fermenting stillness of the wine, which, like many of its relatives, thrives slowly. The 2019 harvest stood out for its impeccable ripeness and was matured completely dry.
Viewing pleasure
It shines in a rich golden yellow.
Fragrance experience
The nose reveals a seductive blend of ripe peach, crisp apple, sweet pear and exotic pineapple, carried by smoky notes that underline its brittle, chalky quality.
Senses of taste
On the palate, the wine beguiles with a play of chalky notes, highlighted by a powerful saltiness and a brilliant acidity. Its long finish already promises pure pleasure, but also indicates its remarkable storage potential. With its noble charm and weightless refinement, the wine underlines the excellent Riesling collection of the 2019 Humbrechts.
For an optimal taste experience, it is recommended to decant the wine a few hours before drinking and to serve it in a generously sized glass. The wine gains in expression if left open for a few days.
Alternative food recommendations
This wine pairs beautifully with golden brown blinis made from Jerusalem artichokes, garnished with smoked salmon and a creamy yoghurt-dill dip. A pumpkin soup with caramelised pears also makes a great accompaniment. Or try roasted Atlantic turbot with a refining vermouth sauce and mint oil.
