Wine profile
Clos Häuserer Riesling is the proud inhabitant of a 1.198 hectare square vineyard, nestled in deep marl soil, rich in limestone and positioned below the prestigious Grand Cru Hengst, flanked by rolling east-facing hills. The Oligocene mother rock hides a good one to one and a half metres deep in the ground, a lush layer of earth that takes its time to absorb heat. Despite its location in a region of early ripening, Clos Häuserer retains its late-ripening characteristics. It is thought that the high free lime content produces some of the reductive characteristics in this wine in its fruiting phase. Amazingly, its first vintage, 1975, still holds a vibrant life.
Winemaking process
A wine that celebrates its acidity and opens and ferments with a slowness that appeals to patience. The 2018 harvest was generous, yielding beautifully ripe grapes and, as usual, this particular drop was the last to complete fermentation in 2018.
Appearance
A shimmering appearance in a full golden yellow.
Scent
The youth of the 2018 Riesling Clos Häuserer is still shrouded in secrecy. A decanted unfolding increases the range of the bouquet and limestone notes emerge along with dried flowers of lime blossom, chamomile, hay and white pepper. Apricot leaves the softness of dryness, fresh pineapple, the crispness of pineapple stem, fragrant vineyard peach, savoury applesauce and even lychee develop steadily with longer breathing. Aniseed, cardamom and ginger add an exotic flair.
Taste
On the palate, it presents itself in its full elegance and freshness. It surprises with delicate salty notes, an invigorating acidity and a fruit that is brighter than the fragrance and evokes memories of pear, honeydew melon and citrus fruits. A Riesling whose slender form accentuates the pleasure and goes perfectly with fresh dishes.
If you plan to open it now, give it a few hours to decant and serve it in a generous glass. A few days of aeration will enhance its expressiveness.
