Wine Description for Weisser Burgunder „Mandelberg“ GG 2023 by Ökonomierat Rebholz
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale straw yellow with a lively green reflection – a glass that promises freshness and precision from the very first glance.
- Nose
- The nose opens with a seductive ripeness: peach, mirabelle plum and a hint of papaya lend the wine a charming, slightly exotic character. Beneath lie citrus zest, fine herbal spice and a cool mineral undertone reminiscent of the muschelkalk soil. Creamy and inviting, yet never opulent.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Mandelberg unfolds a juicy, mouth-filling texture of remarkable elegance. Ripe stone fruit, pear and a hint of lemon curd carry a fine extract sweetness that never feels heavy. A clear, precise acidity provides tension and vibrancy, whilst a vibrating minerality and a saline grip elevate the wine into a class of its own. The texture is silky and supple – a wine with genuine melt and genuine backbone in equal measure.
- Finish
- Long, saline-mineral and of great precision. The finish reveals the depth of the muschelkalk and allows fruit and stone to merge in a lingering, vibrant aftertaste.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Mandelberg lies south-west of Birkweiler in the southern Palatinate, at approximately 250 metres elevation, with south-easterly exposure. Geologically, the vineyard site is a fault of the Rhine Graben with rocks from Permian to Triassic periods: Rotliegendes, Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper. The parcels used for this wine are predominantly situated on loamy muschelkalk – deeper-rooted than the neighbouring Sonnenschein, which gives the wine its characteristic fullness and spicy charm.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pinot Blanc, vinified with consistent restraint: following slow pressing, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, no oak ageing. The wine speaks exclusively through fruit, terroir and the natural tension of its origin.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to calf’s sweetbread with lemon butter, lobster, creamy risottos with white truffle as well as aged Comté or goat’s cheese. Also an excellent choice with pike-perch fillet with herb sauce.
- Special Characteristics
- The Mandelberg is the more charming, fuller-bodied counterpart to the Rebholz classic Im Sonnenschein – less austere, yet equally precise and unmistakably of Großes Gewächs quality. A Pinot Blanc that demonstrates what this often underestimated grape variety is capable of in the right hands.
