Wine Description for Monthelie „Les Crayes“ AOC 2024 by Darviot-Perrin

Character
Monthelie belongs to those quiet gems of the Côte de Beaune that are often overlooked in the shadow of their famous neighbours Volnay and Meursault – unjustly so. The „Les Crayes“ from Darviot-Perrin stands for an elegant, terroir-driven Burgundy style: clearly defined, without overloading, with that fine tension that characterises good Pinot Noir from this corner of the Côte de Beaune. At 13.0% vol. and dry in character, it displays the restraint and precision one would expect from a conscientious, artisanal producer.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyard site „Les Crayes“ lies in the heart of the Monthelie Appellation, nestled between the hills of the Côte de Beaune. The name alludes to calcareous, stony soils – „crayes“ points to chalky, marly subsoils – which lend the wine its characteristic minerality and freshness. The vintage 2024 was marked in Burgundy by a cool, damp spring and a crucially important late summer that demanded patience and care in the vineyard. Those who selected carefully were able to harvest aromatic, precise, lively wines.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir is the dominant red wine variety in Monthelie and finds ideal conditions on the calcareous slopes. Darviot-Perrin, a traditional estate from Chassagne-Montrachet, pursues an artisanal approach that places the natural expressive power of the terroir at the forefront. Ageing typically takes place in Burgundy barrels with moderate oak influence, so as not to mask fruit and origin. The result is a wine of structured lightness – silky in texture, with lively acidity as its backbone.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The fine structure and cool fruitiness of this Burgundy make it a versatile table companion. It harmonises beautifully with grilled salmon fillet, duck breast with cherries or classic Coq au Vin. Also mushroom risotto, veal medallions or a mature Comté complement its character in an elegant manner.
