Wine Description for Les Manyes 2023 by Terroir al Limit
- Colour & Appearance
- A brightly luminous cherry red with delicate, transparent reflections – almost rustic in appearance, yet characterised by a Pinot-like elegance rarely found in Grenache.
- Nose
- Great finesse and authenticity: sour cherry, wild strawberry and elderberry at the core, framed by floral accents of violet and hibiscus. Beneath this, a deep earthiness with forest floor, pine needles and Mediterranean garrigue. Rosemary, thyme, lavender and almond blossom blend in naturally, complemented by subtle spice from juniper and cardamom. Despite the complexity, the overall impression remains bright, precise and imbued with inner calm.
- Palate
- Initially masculine and rustic – in the best sense. Lean, almost thin on the attack, carried by high-toned acidity that quickly transforms into an invigorating juice of sour cherry, blackberry and elderberry. The wine remains cool and elegant, appearing lighter than its aromatics might suggest. Particularly defining: the acidity-driven, Pinot-like character – bloody, iron-tinged, with a quality reminiscent of Volnay. The acidity forms the supporting framework, delivering tension and driving the animation forward consistently. Olive, twigs, juniper and rosemary emerge subtly without disturbing the fruit focus.
- Finish
- Long, precise and characterised by stony minerality. The acidity maintains the tension through to the end, leaving a cool, clear impression with fine herbal notes.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the Cabaces Montsant Natural Park at 800 metres elevation. 60-year-old Garnacha Peluda vines on red clay with abundant limestone – an unusual subsoil that lends this reference wine its finesse. The dry 2023 vintage brought small yields but remarkable balance.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Garnacha Peluda solo. Whole-bunch fermentation, eight months ageing in cement – no wood contact. Purist, clear, uncompromising.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Pan-roasted duck breast with cherry sauce, lamb rack with herb crust, grilled porcini mushrooms, Coq au Vin, beef tartare or Mediterranean vegetable terrine with aubergine and goat’s cheese.
- Special Features
- An extraordinarily drinkable, elegant Grenache in contemporary interpretation. Reminiscent more of fine Burgundy than classic Priorat – an exciting, great piece of winemaking art from Terroir al Limit.
