Info
On the label, Les Manyes says "Vi d'altura". Translated from Catalan, this means. Wine from the heights. This single-varietal Grenache comes from a 1.5 ha plot at the northern end of the Priorat at the foot of the Montsant mountain at an altitude of about 800 metres. There, the 70.75-year-old vines stand on a plateau of argile and at first seem completely unspectacular. To be precise, it is a mutation called Garnacha Peluda, which has a slight fuzz on the berries. Since the 2016 vintage, Dominik Huber has completely moved away from wood for the Les Manyes. At 100%, this wine is aged in cement tanks. He himself says that this is the best wine made by Terroir al Limit to date.
Color
Rich cherry red with bright reflections
Nose
Pure Mediterranean. Yet this vineyard is not at all in the immediate vicinity. Very tomatoey and dark on the nose. Rosemary and basil are also present. A dark, plummy note asserts itself. Almond trees in full bloom and a masculine tone like leather. Rose blossom as well as some tangerine zest bursting with acidity. Likewise currants and some sloe I find after a bit of swirling in the glass. This single varietal Grenache fills me with awe and excitement. Pure fascination.
Palate
Restless I allow myself the first glass. Fleshy, almost bloody, it opens up to me. A very present, fine-grained tannin paves its way and lets hope for great things. This dark red, masculine impression is confirmed. The floral notes, sour cherry and tangerine dominate, yet this masterpiece seems neither delicate nor powerful. The acidity structure pulls the wine fantastically into the length. We're pretty close to perfection here. Perfection is probably the nicer word for this holistic balance and expression. An absolute monument. On the finish, this single varietal Grenache seems brightly fruity and clear. Above all, it makes you want to drink many more sips of Les Manyes 2017. Simply a great wine. Not a show-stopper, but profound like few others.
