Wine Description for Guix Vermell 2021 by Terroir Sense Fronteres

Character
The Guix Vermell represents the Mediterranean soul of Montsant in its most authentic form. Terroir Sense Fronteres, a project by Dominik Huber and Tatjana Peceric, stands for uncompromising terroir interpretation without oenological cosmetics. At 13% alcohol, this Grenache displays a refreshing restraint that is particularly noteworthy in an era of excessively concentrated red wines from Catalonia. The name „Guix“ refers to the calcareous soils of the region – a key to understanding this wine.
Terroir & Origin
Montsant, lying in the shadow of the more famous Priorat, is developing into a discovery for terroir purists. The region benefits from slate soils with limestone deposits („Guix“ means gypsum/limestone in Catalan), continental climate with Mediterranean influence, and old vine stocks. Terroir Sense Fronteres works with traditional vineyard parcels, often on steep slopes, where the vines find natural balance. The project embodies a new generation of Catalan winemakers who place elegance over power.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grenache – or Garnacha, as it is known here – finds ideal conditions in Montsant for mineral interpretation. The winery’s philosophy is based on minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, little to no sulphur, no fining or filtration. The moderate alcohol content points to earlier harvesting and deliberate freshness. One can expect a wine that holds fruit and structure in balance, with the characteristic herbal spice of the Mediterranean and that stony minerality that distinguishes great Grenache.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This wine calls for Catalan cuisine: Calçots with Romesco sauce, braised rabbit with aioli, Chorizo a la Sidra or grilled vegetables. The moderate structure harmonises with lamb shoulder, ratatouille or hard cheese such as Manchego. Served at a slightly chilled temperature (14-16°C), it is also excellent with tuna tataki or mushroom risotto.
