Wine Description for „La Rodeda“ Velles Vinyes 2018 by Familia Nin Ortiz
- Colour & Appearance
- Deep, intense purple-red with youthful brilliance, reflecting the altitude and cool-facing aspect of the vineyard.
- Nose
- Extraordinarily fine and clear – an aromatic profile that showcases Garnacha Peluda in all its elegance. Floral notes of sea lavender, violets and broom open the aromatic play, before a crisp, ripe fruit palette of cherries, blackberries and raspberries emerges. Spicy accents of liquorice, cinnamon and subtle vanilla meld with earthy nuances of tobacco and undergrowth – an impressive balance of power and finesse.
- Palate
- Here the true class of this wine reveals itself: unbridled freshness meets profound substance. La Rodeda positively pulses on the palate, with its own vibration and rhythm that fascinates. The dark, juicy fruit displays bite and structure, underpinned by a fine salinity that betrays the slate soils. The distinctive tannin characteristic of Garnacha Peluda provides backbone without dominating. At just 13.87% alcohol – the lowest in the range – this wine proves that elegance and intensity are not a matter of degree.
- Finish
- Long, energetic and simultaneously decelerating – a paradoxical pleasure that underscores the perfect balance of this wine. Spicy and mineral notes linger.
- Terroir & Origin
- From a tiny 0.6 hectare single-vineyard site named La Rodeda, which ranks among the highest-altitude vineyards in Priorat (650 metres). The rare north-facing aspect and soils of black Llicorella slate and red quartzite lend this wine its characteristic freshness and minerality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Almost 100% Garnacha Peluda (Lladoner Pelut) from vines of approximately 80 years old – a distinctive Grenache variant of great finesse. Whole-bunch fermentation, foot-trodden, natural fermentation. Aged for 19 months in new French barriques. Only 310 bottles produced.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Filet Mignon Extra Gallego with finest salt and pepper, eight-hour braised lamb with dates, or surprisingly also vegetarian makloubé with pomegranate, dates and aubergine.
- Special Features
- The second independent vintage of a wine that has established itself alongside Mas d’en Caçador and La Coma d’en Romeu as the third great wine of the house. The rarity of Garnacha Peluda and the micro-production make it a collector’s item.
